The most modern combat vehicle in the Algerian army’s inventory is 600 T-90SAs, an export version of the famous T-90A tank exclusively for the Algerian army.

The T-90 tank, a technological marvel, combines the best features of the proven T-72 and the technologically superior T-80 tank. The T-90 is currently becoming the most capable tank available to 3rd countries. In Africa, Algeria has a respectable ground force with mainly Soviet and Russian origin. The most modern combat vehicle in the Algerian army’s inventory is 600 T-90SAs, an export version of the famous T-90A tank exclusively for the Algerian army.

In the period from 2006 to 2012, Algeria signed two contracts for the procurement of more than 300 T-90SA tanks. An additional 200 were ordered in 2016. Algeria is currently the sole operator of the T-90 in Africa, and one of the most capable and best equipped forces in North Africa.

The T-90SA is an improved version of the T-90S which is an advanced version of the original T-90. Compared to the original version, T-90SA is equipped with a more powerful engine, with 1,000 horsepower, Shtora-1 optical-electronic suppression system, an air conditioning system, and a cooling system for night vision equipment.

The main weapon of the T-90SA is similar to the original T-90A, a 125mm 2A46M-1 smoothbore gun, combined with an automatic loader. Fire rate up to 7 rounds/minute. The gun is compatible with conventional ammunition as well as 9M119M laser-guided anti-tank projectile with a maximum range of 5,000 m. Secondary armament consists of a 7.62 mm 6P7K machine gun mounted to the right of the main armament and a remote weapon station which is mounted on the turret roof armed with one 12.7 mm NSVT heavy machine gun.

The T-90SA is also fitted with an appliqué of Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armor to the outside of the turret. The Algerian T-90SA in the first batch is not equipped the famous TShU-1-7 infrared dazzlers, but instead adds 2 pieces of explosive reactive armor. Vehicles of the following batches have been supplemented with this device.

The T-90 has a crew of three, driver, commander, and gunner. Gunner and commander are seated in the turret with the gunner on the left and the commander on the right. The T-90 can run at a maximum road speed of 60 km/hr with a maximum road cruising range of 500 km. To increase the operational range of the T-90, two diesel fuel drums can be carried under the hull rear.

In Algeria, Serving alongside the T-90SA are BMPT-72 Terminator 2 tank support vehicles, for which Algeria was the first foreign client, as well as older T-72M1 tanks which have been extensively modernised with Russian assistance. In addition to the T-90SA MBTs, Algeria currently operates the T-72M1, T-62, and T-55AMV tanks, making it the most capable ground force in Africa.
