Interceptor aircraft

Interceptor fighters (or simply interceptors) are a type of fighter specifically designed to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft, especially bombers. Some of these aircraft were built before the Second World War and ended in the late 1960s, when they became less important because the role of strategic bombers was replaced by intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).

The purpose of the interception aircraft was to meet the need to protect the ground target from the attacks of mass destruction weapons. Interceptors are specialized fighters equipped with very modern long-range radar, carrying long-range air-to-air missiles to intercept enemy aircraft and missiles. This type of aircraft has very high speed, long range but poor maneuverability because it often fights by launching missiles from a distance. Dogfighting usually takes place outside the pilot’s sight. The most famous interceptors are the Soviet MiG-23, MiG-25 and the US F-4, F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18, and F-22.
