Regarding the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System, this is a powerful American artillery system that has been proven on the Ukrainian battlefield. In France, the M270 is known as the LRU, which is the European variant of the M270A1 related to Germany, France and Italy. According to a statement from the office of the Ukrainian defense minister, France has delivered additional heavy rocket launchers to Ukraine, and is currently on duty with the Ukrainian armed forces and ready to use against Russian forces.

France announced the donation of 2 LRU rocket launchers to Ukraine on November 19, 2022. Since the outbreak of the war, other countries, including the United Kingdom, Norway and Germany have supplied similar weapons systems to Ukraine. The French launchers are equipped with the European Fire Control System designed by Airbus Defense and Space, which disables the firing of submunitions-carrying rockets to ensure full compliance with the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

France is upgrading its M270s to fire the 227 mm M31 high explosive (HE) unitary warhead Guided MLRS (GMLRS). French army had a fleet of 55 M270s, only 13 units are receiving the upgrade to the LRU configuration, with the rest having been withdrawn from service. LRU program addresses the need to conduct all-weather precision ground strikes metric, up to 70 km.

The M31 has a 90 kg HE warhead; includes GPS and inertial navigation system guidance to provide a circular error of probability of less than 10 m; and doubles the missile’s range to 70 km. In France, the M31 rocket is manufactured by the U.S. company Lockheed Martin with an engine supplied by the French Company Roxel.

The M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System is an armored, self-propelled, multiple rocket launcher, based on the chassis of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The first M270s were delivered in 1983. The MLRS were subsequently adopted by several NATO countries and other countries. The MLRS first saw service with the United States in the 1991 Gulf War. Some 1,300 M270 systems have been manufactured in the United States and in Europe, along with more than 700,000 rockets. The production of the M270 ended in 2003, when a last batch was delivered to the Egyptian Army.

Multiple Launch Rocket Systems from C Battery, 6th Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, 210th Field Artillery Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division fire rockets during a cross-boundary live-fire March 25 near Cheorwon, South Korea. The live-fire was part of a larger combined joint exercise with elements from the U.S. Marines and Air Force as well as the Republic of Korea Army and Air Force.

The French LRU is powered by Cummins VTA-903 turbocharged 8-cylinder diesel engine, developing 500 hp, coupled to a General Dynamics Land Systems HMPT-500 hydro-mechanical transmission. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 65 km/h and a maximum cruising range of 480 km.
