Grim-2 is a domestic short-range mobile tactical ballistic missile system of Ukraine, with the appearance and technical features very similar to the 9M723 of Russia’s Iskander-M complex.

Ukraine’s most powerful deterrent is the Grim-2 short-range ballistic missile system, which is considered to be enough to cause concern in Russia, but since the beginning of the war, this weapon has not been deployed. According to a video released by the Russian Defense Ministry on March 30, 2023, the country’s air defense forces are said to have intercepted am operational-tactical missile, “Grim-2”. Thus, it is possible that Ukraine has deployed this weapon.

Grim-2 is a domestic short-range mobile tactical ballistic missile system of Ukraine, with the appearance and technical features very similar to the 9M723 of Russia’s Iskander-M complex. The name of the system, Grim-2, also known as Hrim, Grom or OTRK Sapsan, was developed in 2013 to replace the Tochka-U complexes born in the Soviet Union. Testing of the experimental model was initially planned for the winter of 2015, but were postponed to autumn 2016.

The original version for Ukraine, was to have a range of 500 kilometers. The later version, developed for export, has a range limited to 280 kilometers. The Grim-2 missile is mounted on a highly maneuverable 10×10 chassis with two ready-to-launch missiles, making it the equivalent of the Russian Iskander-M. In the firing position, the missiles are erected vertically at the rear of the truck chassis.

Grim-2 has a length of 7.2 m, a diameter of 0.95 m, carrying a conventional warhead weighing 480 kg; and Circular error probable of 50 – 70 m. The range of the Grom-2 missile is still a mystery, Ukraine has only announced an export version that can reach a range of 280 km. Meanwhile, the actual range of the domestic version is estimated by military experts to be at least 500 km, or even more.

The missile’s estimated impact area with a fragmentation-high-explosive payload is over 10,000 m², while a cluster charge covers 2-3 hectares. The onboard control system is inertial and comes with various navigation and guidance systems, such as radar-based and optoelectronic systems.

Although possessing the introduced features is very superior, but it is surprising that since the outbreak of the conflict, Grim-2 has not been deployed. According to many international analysts, the main reason lies in the fact that Ukraine has not yet mass-produced these weapons. There are only a few prototypes for performance evaluation. Since the conflict broke out, Ukraine’s defense industry facilities have been severely damaged, which makes it impossible for them to put their strongest deterrent weapons into action.
