Hetman Sahaydachniy frigate, number U130, flagship and symbol of the Ukrainian navy.

Despite being quite old, Hetman Sahaydachny is still the largest and most powerful warship of the Ukrainian Navy. Ukraine even issued a stamp of this ship.

Hetman Sahaydachniy is designated a submarine hunting frigate of the Krivak III class (project 1135N) developed during the Soviet period. It was launched on March 29, 1992 and commissioned on April 2, 1993.

The Ukrainian Navy in the past owned up to 4 ships of this class, but so far only the Hetman Sahaydachiy is still active, her sisters have been scraped. However, Hetman’s fate was not very bright, because the Ukrainian Navy could not afford to let its largest ship make long voyages.

Hetman Sahaydachniy has a full load displacement of about 3,510 tons, a length of 123 m, a beam of 14.2 m, and a draft of 4.7 m. She is equipped with a Combined gas and gas propulsion system, consisting of two M62 cruising turbines and two M8K jet turbines. Top speed can be achieved up to 32 knots, range is 3,500 nmi at cruising speed 14 knots.

In terms of armament, the ship is equipped with a single 100mm AK-100 cannon, 2 × sextuple 30 mm AK-630 CIWS, 2 × quad 533 mm torpedo tubes, 2 × RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers, and 9K33 Osa short-range air defense missile system. In addition, the ship does not own any anti-ship missiles. With its full displacement of nearly 3,600 tons, this is said to be a rather weak fire configuration.

Unfortunately, after the loss of Crimea, Ukraine’s largest shipyards and military ports have also become Russian property. As a result, maintenance and overhaul of the Hetman Sahaydachiy was not carried out, which greatly affected its service life and ability to perform marine duties.

On the other hand, the current economic situation of Ukraine is extremely bleak, unable to bear the expensive costs of the voyages of this submarine hunting frigate, so frequent lying on the shore is inevitable. Currently, the situation of the Ukrainian Navy is extremely bad as can be seen from their only flagship. After all, they are leaning towards the US in an attempt to break free from Russian influence.
