The Russian Air Force Su-35 fighters in Syria were full of missiles, including two extremely powerful types, which chased and approached the US Navy P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft for 65 minutes.

Russian Su-35 has been tracking US aircraft
The US Navy has released images showing two Russian Air Force Su-35 fighters at the Khmeimim military base, chasing and approaching their P-8A Poseidon submarine hunting reconnaissance patrol aircraft over the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Syria.
The US Navy harshly criticized Russia for claiming two Russian Su-35 fighters approached the P-8A in an “unsafe” and “irresponsible” way.
Notice of the 6th Fleet of the US Navy said: “For the third time in two months, Russian pilots flew in an unsafe and unprofessional manner while intercepting a U.S. Navy P-8A Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft in U.S. Sixth Fleet, May 26, 2020.”
Notably, in the latest confrontation between the Su-35 and the US P-8A Poseidon, the Russian fighters carried a lot of modern missiles. There are two very powerful types that can scare any military pilot of any country, including experienced US pilots.
Specifically, the two Su-35 Russian fighters have brought the following weapon configuration:
- The Su-35, number 21 “Red”, carried two R-27 medium-range air-to-air missiles (NATO designation AA-10 Alamo) and four R-77 medium-range air-to-air missiles (RVV- AE, NATO designation as AA-12 Adder).
- The Su-35, number 64 “Red” carried two R-73 short-range air-to-air missiles (NATO designation AA-11 Archer), two R-27 medium-range air-to-air missiles and two R-77 medium-range air-to-air missile.

The Russian Su-35 carries two terrible types of missiles that even experienced pilots fear?
As can be seen in this sortie, Russian Su-35 fighters carry a lot of missiles, mainly long-range missiles, very modern, much better than previous times. Normally, the Russian fighters (Su-35 or Su-30SM) carrying out patrol missions also carry two R-73 air-to-air missiles to self-defend at close range. But this time only one of the two carried this missile. This proves that the Russian Air Force is ready to shoot down all aircraft showing signs of intimidating their forces from afar without warning.
R-73 air-to-air missiles are designed for aerial close combat. The arrival of R-73, Russia’s leading air-to-air missile, has surprised many countries by its superior technical and tactical capabilities.
In 1997, the upgraded R-73M was equipped with more advanced features. It has a greater range, wider detection angle and better resistance to interference. The range has been improved, reaching the maximum range of 40km.
However, if the R-73 is a missile exclusively used for close combat, the Russian Su-35 this time also carries two types of powerful air-to-air missiles, the R-27 and the R-77.
R-27 air-to-air missiles have 6 main versions: R-27R1, R-27T1, R-27P1, R-27RE1, R-27ET1 and R-27EP1. The maximum range is from 70 to 130km, depending on the type. They are used in medium and long range aerial combat, combined with superior maneuverability. Su-35 has in the hands of “venom” extremely dangerous to disable any target.

R-77 air-to-air missiles (also known as RVV-AE) have features that go far beyond the same type of missiles in the world. Some military experts assess that RVV-AE also possesses many features that are superior to American AMRAAM AIM-120A missiles.
RVV-AE has a medium-range self-guidance control, equipped with a variety of navigation systems that can kill targets such as supersonic aircraft, cruise missiles, surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles. It can also deal with tactical bombers and helicopters at distances up to 90km. The latest version of R-77M1 has a range of up to 175km.
The missile can destroy targets from any direction, at any viewing angle, day and night, adverse weather conditions, in environments of high radiation and electromagnetic interference. It uses the “fire and forget” feature and multichannel navigation. RVV-AE can defeat flying targets up to 3,600 km/h, at altitudes from 20 m to 25 km.

It is clear that with the RVV-AE, the power of Su-35 fighters in patrols and aerial combat is at a new level. Not only is it powerful enough to dominate but it also terrifies foreign military pilots, including the most experienced American pilots.
