Ka-60 has a length of 15.6m, main rotor diameter of 13.5m, height of 4.6m, maximum takeoff tonnage of 6.5 tons. The design of the Ka-60 is quite similar to the helicopters in this class. The airframe is designed with perfect aerodynamic contours, large open doors on both fuselage, retractable three-leg energy-absorbing landing gear and multi-blade tail rotor in the tail ring.

The cockpit is designed for the two-man crew sitting side by side, the main pilot on the right while the left being a co-pilot. Ka-60 can be equipped with dual controls, the Arbalet millimeter wave radar installed in the nose. According to the manufacturer, composite materials make up about 60% of the helicopter’s structure weight.

The aircraft is covered with an infrared absorption coating, the exhaust is also redesigned to lower the thermal signature. Behind the cockpit is the passenger compartment, which can accommodate 16 fully armed soldiers or 2.8 tons of cargo. In the role of medical evacuation, it can carry three paramedics and six patients. Air conditioning and heating systems are also included.

At the top of the passenger cabin are the engines. The main rotor consists of four composite blades with swept back tips, which are advertised by the manufacturer as being resistant to 23mm bullets. The tail rotor is protected in a ring to increase survivability, horizontal tail surfaces are combined with vertical fins protrude from the empennage sides. A cargo hook allows external loads to be carried, the maximum payload is 2.7 tons.


The Ka-60 Kasatka’s powerplant is two Saturn RD-600V engines, developing 1,500 hp each. The helicopter can reach a maximum speed of 308 km/h, a cruise speed of 290 km/h, a range of 770 km and a service ceiling of 5,700 m. The fuel tanks are filled with polyurethane foam to reduce the risk of explosion.


In addition to the basic multi-role version, the Ka-60 has been developed with many variants, including the Ka-60U training version, Ka-60K Navy version, Ka-60R Reconnaissance version. Exported version is the Ka-64 Sky Horse, which is Western certified, equipped with two General Electric T700 turboshaft engines and a five-blade main rotor.


On military versions, the Ka-60 can be equipped with two seven round 80mm rocket pods, or two guns either 7.62mm or 12.7mm. The selected weapons are suspension mounted from a single piece boom installed transversely in the cabin to the rear of the doors.


Most recently, Kamov developed a civilian version, Ka-62. Russian Ka-62 helicopters have completed the final tests for certification. Ka-62 will use Turbomeca Ardiden 3G turboshaft engines of 1,751 hp.

According to the published images, the design of the Ka-62 has a certain change compared to the original Ka-60, the fuselage is designed more elegantly.
