Based on experience in the Syrian war, Russia has developed an upgraded version of the Mi-8 military transport helicopter with the designation Mi-8AMTSh-VN.
It is sometimes known as the Terminator, the Mi-8AMT is a specialized armored assault version, designed for special forces. Earlier, the Ministry of Defense signed two contracts for their production, the agreement provides for the supply of helicopters during 2021 and 2022.

Main role of this helicopter is to carry cargo and troops and support them with its firepower. It can also perform evacuation and combat search and rescue. It can soften-up enemy defenses before landing. This helicopter can engage enemy infantry, armored vehicles and even main battle tanks. Also it has secondary air-to-air capability against low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and UAVs.
This helicopter can carry 4,000 kg of payload in its cargo compartment. Alternatively it can carry loads up to 4,000 kg externally. The Mi-8AMTSh can carry 26 troops. Cargo area can be easily transformed for medical evacuation role. In this role helicopter can carry 12 stretchers and one medical attendant.
Integrated with a series of new features, the Mi-8AMTSh-VN is said to have significantly improved its ability to fight as well as survive on the battlefield. Helicopters are equipped to perform their duties in all weather conditions day and night. The new radar increases the range of detection and identification and can accurately detect meteorological conditions over long distances.
