Medium-class Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) has passed its initial mobility tests.
Information about the Type-X was first announced in April 2020. It is the second Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) to be manufactured by the company after its flagship product THeMIS.
Milrem Robotics is an Estonian robotic vehicle manufacturer. Their primary products are the THeMIS UGV, the Multiscope UGV and now the Type-X.
Type-X will become a smart fighting vehicle in formation with main battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, capable of performing missions and occupying the most dangerous positions, reducing risk personnel casualties.
Estimated size is 2.2m high, 2.9m wide and 6m long, the Type-X weighs only about 12 tons, one third of what a real manned infantry fighting vehicle is today. As a result, the vehicle can be easily transported as well as airlifted from transport aircraft such as the heavy lift helicopter, C-130 and the KC-390.
The Type-X will be powered by a high-performance electric engine and a diesel generator. The application of an efficient energy management solution gives it outstanding maneuverability on the terrain.
With a low profile of only 2.2 m, and the engine compartment at the rear makes infrared signature not stand out on the battlefield. It features a tracked design with armor protection which increases its cross-country performance and durability.
The Type-X is designed to be highly modifiable and easily upgradable, meaning it can be fitted with either autocannon turrets up to 50mm, such as John Cockerill CPWS II, or various other weapons systems, such as ATGMs, SAMs, radars, mortars etc. The heavy armament that can be mounted on the vehicle means that the Type-X provides equal or overmatching firepower and tactical usage compared to traditional infantry fighting vehicles.
In October 2020, Milrem and the Israeli UVision announced that they are co-developing a variant of the Type-X and THeMIS that can mount a multi-canister launcher for the latter’s Hero-120 and Hero-400EC loitering munitions.
