At the end of 2016, a batch of 61 Revolution tanks was delivered to the Republic of Indonesia Army, designated Leopard 2RI.
When the Russians introduced the T-14 Armata Main Battle tank during the 2015 Victory Day Parade, the whole world had to admire the technological peak of the new generation tank. The T-14 Armata is said to outperform any existing NATO tank line. These countries are seeking to upgrade or build new tanks to counterbalance the Russian T-14. Revolution MBT is one of the latest NATO candidates.
On May 20, 2016, a video was uploaded to Youtube by Rheinmetall Group, producer of Revolution MBT. Rheinmetall Group has been implementing this project since 2010. Unlike the T-14 Armata, however, the Revolution tank is not a new tank, but an upgraded version of the Leopard 2A4 main battle tank. According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta magazine, this comprehensive module upgrade package will help the tank have better self-defense, an upgraded digital fire control system and more firepower.
The Leopard 2RI of Indonesia
Currently, the only beneficiary from this project is Indonesia. At the end of 2016, a batch of 61 Revolution tanks was delivered to the Republic of Indonesia Army, designated Leopard 2RI. Leopard 2RI stands for Leopard 2 Republic of Indonesia. This is considered one of the few most powerful tanks currently in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the second country in Southeast Asia equipped with Leopard 2 tanks, the first is Singapore with Leopard 2SG, another upgraded version of Leopard 2A4.
Improvements of Revolution tank
Recalling a bit about Leopard 2, the original version was designed during the Cold War, in line with the open battlefield doctrine for intense conflicts. For Revolution MBT, the tank is designed to suit urban combat conditions and low intensity conflicts. Revolution has upgraded its full armor to protect against RPG or IED attacks.
The tank is equipped with AMAP protective armor, also known as Advanced Modular Armor Protection, using modern nano-ceramic, titanium and steel alloys. This armor provides a higher level of protection against multiple threats on a large scale, easy to be replaced and switched in all battlefield conditions. AMAP Armor can be customized according to customer requirements.
In addition to the AMAP armor module, Revolution MBT is also equipped with new Rheinmetall ROSY smoke grenade dischargers. It can create a camouflage smoke screen within 0.6 seconds. The tank is also fitted with a mine protection package.
MBT Revolution is heavier than its predecessor. It weighs 60 tons compared to 56.6 tons of the original Leopard 2A4 version.
The engine is retained
Despite a slight increase in weight due to the new armor upgrade package, the maneuverability of Revolution MBT is still guaranteed. The tank retains the MTU MB 873 Ka-501 12-cylinder twin-turbocharged diesel engine, producing 1,500 horsepower. It can reach a maximum speed of 70 km/h on flat roads and a range of up to 500km. The vehicle needs a crew of four, including commander, gunner, loader and driver.
In terms of firepower, the tank retained a fully-stabilized 120mm L44 smoothbore gun of the Leopard 2A4, using a manual reload mechanism. A total of 42 rounds are carried, 15 are stored in the turret bustle, while the remaining are stored in the hull. The L44 gun is compatible with all 120mm NATO standard amunitions, as well as the latest programmable HE rounds.
In response to aerial and infantry threats, Revolution MBT is equipped with a remote-controlled weapon station, including a 12.7mm machine gun. Another secondary armament is a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun.
Revolution MBT is equipped with modern fire control systems and enhanced reconnaissance capabilities. The commander can monitor the battlefield with a 360-degree periscope, using a battlefield management system to identify and destroy targets. New modern fire control system improves the probability of hitting the target from the first shot.
In general, Revolution MBT is designed to be suitable for urban combat, increasing the chances of surviving an ambush. Particularly in armed conflicts against rebels, very popular weapons such as RPGs, anti-tank missiles, improvised explosive devices and mines.
Observers say, with a modern design, possessing high-tech armor covering the hull and turret, Revolution BMT is now a formidable tank for any opponent facing them.
The German Defense Ministry said it plans to increase the number of main battle tanks in the German army’s inventory from 225 to 328 units.
It can be seen that the Germans are trying to make the best use of the Leopard 2 tank, with extensive upgrades to make these tanks capable of fighting in the modern environment. Currently, Germany has decided to upgrade more than 100 Leopard 2 tanks to the Revolution standard.
