According to the introduction, the main task of the Avtobaza-M complex is to search, classify and observe the orbits of flying objects

Avtobaza-M electronic warfare complex is responsible for monitoring the target, automatically transmitting the data to the air defense command. It consists of 4 signal detection stations, and one information processing station.

Depending on signal strength, Avtobaza-M can detect targets at ranges of up to 400 km. Currently, this advanced radio-technical reconnaissance complex is considered to be superior to all similar systems. Russia claims its product surpass the systems developed by Czech experts, Vera and Tamara. It can identify up to 150 types of signals and their parameters.

The target information is displayed on the TV screen with data on their direction finding, angular coordinates, radiation signal parameters, and radar type classification. The APUR automated jamming control system is fed with target data via cable at a range of up to 100 meters.

Experts believe that active electronic warfare systems play an increasingly important role in modern warfare, even as an indispensable element besides interceptor missile complexes. The introduction of this state-of-the-art electronic warfare complex to Hmeimim airbase shows that Russia is increasingly wary of the rebels’ attack drones and NATO UAV reconnaissance.

As soon as the 1L222M Avtobaza-M appeared at the Hmeimim airbase, there was information about its “real war performance” with US aircraft. According to Russian website Avia-pro, the electronic warfare system was involved in a collision in the Syrian sky between two US MQ-9 Reaper drones.

However, at present, there is nothing more to say than speculation. However, experts believe that the US military could hardly make a mistake and bring two independently operating attack drones closer to a critical distance, which would entail a collision of the latter.

In related developments, international analysts believe that if the two MQ-9 Reaper crashes were actually due to the impact of Avtobaza-M, the US may have to give up the use of drones to conducting reconnaissance near the Syrian border.
