The Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers is the United States Navy’s first class of destroyer built around the Aegis Combat System and the SPY-1D multifunction passive electronically scanned array radar.

Partially designed by the South Korean Ministry of National Defense, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. The vessels of the class were built to strengthen ROK Navy defense against North Korea and other emerging threats as well as provide the ROK Navy with true blue water, ocean going capabilities.
Design
Apart from the longer hull, the overall design of DDG-991 is identical to that of the Arleigh Burke Class destroyer. The destroyer has an overall length of 165m, beam of 21m and draft of 6m. The vessel can accommodate more than 300 crew members.
At 8,500 tons standard displacement and 11,000 tons full load, the DDG-991 Sejong the Great destroyer and her sisters are by far the largest destroyers in the South Korean Navy, and built slightly bulkier and heavier than Arleigh Burke-class destroyers or Atago-class destroyers to accommodate 32 more missiles.
Electronic systems
The vessel revolves around the Lockheed Martin AEGIS system. Aegis Weapon System is the combination of a radar and weapon system capable of simultaneous warfare against air, ballistic missile, surface. The Aegis Weapon System is a seamlessly integrated radar and missile system capable of simultaneous operation defending against advanced air, surface and subsurface threats.
A key component of the Aegis Weapon System is the SPY-1 multi-function phased array radar. It is one of the world’s most advanced and versatile maritime radar.
The DDG-991 and other Korean Aegis destroyer KDX-III Project is also fitted with the AN/SPY-1D multifunction radar and four antenna arrays are housed in a single deck house. The ship is also equipped with AN/SPG-62 fire control radar, Atlas Elektronik bow-mounted DSQS-21 BZ-M sonar and MTeQ towed array sonar system. These destroyers have the capability to track and monitor any missile launched from anywhere from North Korea.
Armament
Regarding weapons system, DDG-991 is equipped with 16 SSM-700K Hae Sung long-range anti-ship missiles and 32 Hyunmoo III land attack missiles. Two MK 41 vertical launch systems, one with 48 cells and another with 32 cells, are fitted forward and aft of the vessel for SM-2 Block IIIB missiles. So, destroyers of the Sejong the Great-class have a capacity of 128 missiles, as opposed to 96 on the Arleigh Burke class and the Japanese Atago-class destroyers. The Sejong the Great class is thus one of the most heavily armed ships in the world.
The ship point-defence is provided by a single 30mm Goalkeeper close-in weapon system and a RIM-116 rolling airframe missile block 1 21-round launcher.
The main gun fitted forward is a 127mm L62 Mk-45 Mod 4 naval gun. The gun can fire at a rate of 16 to 20 rounds a minute for a range of 24km. The anti-submarine weaponry includes K-ASROC Hong Sahng-uh anti-submarine rockets and K745 LW Cheong Sahng-uh torpedoes. A total of 16 rockets are fired from the launcher fitted on the aft.
The DDG-991 destroyer have a stern helicopter deck to support the operations of two Westland Lynx Mk 99 Anti-submarine warfare helicopters. Hangar facilities are provided for the helicopters.
Propulsion
Sejong the Great destroyer is equipped with a combined gas turbine propulsion system. Four General Electric LM2500 gas turbines driving the two shafts provide a total power output of 100,000 Shaft horsepower. The ship systems are powered by three Rolls-Royce AG9140RF gas turbine generator sets. The propulsion system provides a top speed of 30 knots and a maximum range of 5,500 nautical miles at 20 knots.
