155 mm wheeled artillery systems are trending in favor of tracked systems, as they offer greater strategic mobility due to less dependence on heavy transport vehicle. In Israel, Elbit Systems is developing a new fully automatic 155 mm self-propelled artillery system for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to replace the M109 155 mm artillery systems around 2023.

The new artillery system, known as SIGMA, is under development with an initial $125 million deal, announced in March 2019. It is based on a US-supplied Oshkosh Defense 10×10 platform selected by the IDF. The vehicle is a family of trucks, based on a common 5-axle ten-wheel drive 10×10 chassis, that can be configured according to mission requirements. SIGMA is expected to compete directly with the Caesar artillery system of the French company Nexter.

According to Janes, the platforms are expected to be fitted with a fully protected control cab, a nuclear biological chemical (NBC) system, and full air conditioning for a crew of two or three. The turret mounted at the rear of the truck chassis will be remotely controlled and is armed with a 155 mm/52 caliber barrel. The design of the turret suggests that the SIGMA 155 will be also equipped with a fully automatic loading system.

The crew cab can accommodate all the operators of the artillery system. All the firing operations can be performed from inside of the crew cabin. In firing position, two hydraulically operated spades mounted on each side of the truck chassis are lowered on the ground to stabilize the vehicle. The blades can be retracted after the firing operations and leave the position.

SIGMA, once operational, will likely be deployed by fast reaction units by military transport aircraft. It will provide a high degree of mobility and simplify logistics compared to heavier tracked platforms.
