Once possessing military technology not inferior to Russia, but political instability has made Ukraine’s military technology fall back too much, their defense products are no longer appreciated as before. Therefore, it is not uncommon for people to doubt the power of this country’s T-72AMT main battle tank.
The T-72AMT was first publicly revealed in 2017. It is an upgraded version of the T-72A main battle tank, developed at the Kiev Armoured Plant based in Ukraine. The type was adopted by the Ukrainian Army, however overall the procurement of less than 50 units was planned. In 2021 at least another 5 tanks were delivered to Ukrainian Army.
The hull structure of the vehicle houses a driver’s cab at the front, a fighting section in the centre and a power pack at the rear. The crew comfort has been enhanced, while the major components have been upgraded to enhance lethality and survivability of the tank. The tank measures 9.5m-long, 3.5m-wide and 2.2m-high. It is manned by a crew of three, including a driver, a gunner and a commander.
The tank is fitted with modules of Kontakt-1 and Nozh add-on explosive reactive armor. Some sources report that front of the turret is equivalent to 850 to 900 mm or rolled homogenous armor. Rear part of the hull and turret are fitted with cage armor. It improves protection against anti-tank rockets and missiles.
