About Tor-M2, this is an upgraded version of the famous Russian Tor air defense system, equipped with surface-to-air missiles.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, during a recent exercise in southern Astrakhan, squadrons of short-range Tor-M2 air defense missiles eliminated hypothetical aerial targets. Air defense complexes have completed combat training missions when moving at a speed of 20 km/h. The gunner locked and intercepted a missile that simulated an enemy air target at a range of more than 10 km, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
About Tor-M2, this is an upgraded version of the famous Russian Tor air defense system, equipped with surface-to-air missiles. It is an all-weather low to medium altitude, short-range surface-to-air missile system designed for destroying airplanes, helicopters, cruise missiles, precision guided munitions, unmanned aerial vehicles and short-range ballistic threats.
Tor was also the first air defence system in the world designed from the start to shoot down precision guided weapons like the AGM-86 ALCM day and night, in bad weather and jamming situations.
Tor M2 uses eight 9M331 and 9M332 missiles. These have a range of up to 7 km and altitude of up to 6 km. The system can also carry 16 new 9M338 missiles with a range of 16 km and altitude of 10 km. The 9M338K is a designation of the missile in its launch container. This missile was reportedly developed since 1993. It is claimed that this system can deflect massive enemy air raids when enemy extensively uses electronic countermeasures.
Military experts say that it is difficult to find an air defense system similar to Tor-M2 abroad. Tor-M2 is capable of shooting down targets at a 360-degree field of view around it, while other air defense systems (such as the American Patriot) can only detect targets at an angle of view of 180 degrees.
Besides, the Tor system is also more mobile. It can shoot down targets on the move, whereas the Patriot has to stop and prepare for a battle. That will make it take longer to hit the target. However, the limitation of Tor-M2 is that it can only hit targets 16km away, while the Patriot’s range is up to 180km.
