The Type 08 or ZBL-08 is a family of eight-wheeled amphibious, modular armored vehicle developed by Norinco for infantry fire support, battlefield logistics and quick reaction operations.

For the last two decades, China has paid great attention to the development of amphibious forces. The Type 08s can carry up to 10 fully equipped soldiers in their troop compartment, depending on the variant, and send the soldiers into battle. Once dismounted, the vehicles would support ground infantry through fire with high-caliber guns, cannons, or anti-tank missiles.

The Type 08 or ZBL-08 is a family of eight-wheeled amphibious, modular armored vehicle developed by Norinco for infantry fire support, battlefield logistics and quick reaction operations. Developed by Norinco since the 1990s, the Type 08 is the successor to other older Chinese wheeled vehicles, and was first seen in 2006 during road testing.

Type 08 has a weight of about 15 to 25 tons, depending on the variant. It has a length of 8 m, a width of 3 m, and a height of 2.1 m without turret. The base role for the Type-08 is an Infantry Fighting Vehicle. This version mounts a complete traversing powered turret armed through a 30mm autocannon, machine gun, Anti-Tank Guided Missile, and smoke grenade dischargers. This provides the troop transport with the ability to support soldiers as they advance in hostile territory. The Armored Personnel Carrier form is more modestly-armed through a 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun and can carry more troops.

Type 08 family is powered by the Deutz BF6M1015C water-cooled V-type 6-cylinder diesel engine, developing 440 hp, and an automated manual transmission. The front four wheels are capable of power steering. The maximum speed is 100 km/h with 800km of range on highway. The vehicle is fully amphibious with hydraulically controlled water jets mounted to the rear. The Type 08 is fitted with computer-controlled central tire inflation system and steel-reinforced radial tire to improve mobility under off-road and emergency situation.

In total, more than 4,500 vehicles were produced. The Type 08 is probably one of China’s more potent ship-to-shore vehicles, especially in the role of troop transport. Though indeed more lightly armored than some of China‚Äôs other vehicles, the Type 08 would nevertheless be a tough nut to crack.
